10th September 2009
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school. I hope you have all enjoyed a restful summer break. The weather was not quite as promised but we seem to have some sun at last! I hope all the children are ready to work hard and make great progress this year.
Building Work
Jordan and Faber are doing an excellent job and we hope to complete by Friday 18th September or possibly earlier.
Both Beech and Oak Classes are complete and we are just waiting for the upstairs work to be finished. It is always great when builders are ahead of schedule.
I cannot believe how light and wide the new staircase is and the size of our staffroom and computer room is amazing. This has been a very worthwhile project and it is great that both the staff and children will benefit.
Ash Class is now up and running, led by Miss Moriarty and we welcome our 13 new reception children, 11 of whom are staying all day. Because we have moved to a 4 class system we can welcome Miss Helen Leslie who is the new Willow class teacher (Years 1 and 2). We definitely have exciting times ahead!
Unfortunately Mrs Donaldson is still not well enough to return to school. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope that she will be back teaching Beech as soon as she is able.
In the meantime I am very grateful to Miss Legge who is continuing to provide excellent cover during this absence. The children know her quite well and it is ideal for them and Mrs Cook-Paine that they can work with the same person.
I will keep you informed but can stress that the children are not disadvantaged in any way. Thank you for your continued support.
Class Termly Newsletter
The class newsletters will be sent out next Thursday and these will give you detailed information about what the children will be doing this term.
Oliver Twist
The whole school enjoyed a performance of Oliver Twist this morning. It was performed by M&M Productions who did Charlotte’s Webb last year. I think I can speak for all the staff and children when I say it was superb and it was a great start to the day. I’m sure you will hear all about it from your children this afternoon when they come out of school. They may even be singing some songs from Oliver Twist! The parrot called “Dickens” went down very well.
Harvest Thanksgiving Service
We will be holding a Harvest Thanksgiving Service in the church next Friday (18th September) at 2.30pm. All parents and friends are invited to join us. Children are requested to bring in a harvest gift for the service. Either items of fresh fruit or vegetables, tins of food or dried foodstuffs. These, as usual, will be distributed to those in need.
Transfer to High School – September 2010
All children in Year 6 have been given a letter to take home regarding the procedure for children who are due to transfer to High School next year. Please read this letter carefully. Parents are being encouraged to apply on-line and for those parents who do not have internet access we are happy to offer a computer in the ICT suite for completing and submitting the application. Please contact Helen in the office if you wish to use our facilities. All parents must complete an application and the closing date for applications is 23 October 2009.
Individual School Photographs
Ashley Wood Photographer will be in school next Wednesday 16th September in the afternoon to take individual school photographs. If you have more than one child attending school and would like a photograph of all siblings please let Helen know in advance.
Illness – Reminder
If your child is off school ill please remember to contact the school office at the earliest opportunity to inform us of their absence. When your child returns to school please send in a short note to the class teacher explaining the reason for absence. If your child has a medical/dental/optician’s appointment please try to limit their time off school to the minimum time required. I.e. if the appointment is early in the morning please bring your child to school once they have attended their appointment. Many thanks for your cooperation.
Samaritan’s Purse Shoe box Appeal
Once again we will be taking part in the above appeal and we attach a leaflet to the newsletter giving details of what can go into your shoe box. The boxes will be dropped off in Blandford at the end of October before half term. Please support this appeal and give to children who will have nothing other than this shoe box of gifts. If you cannot fill a shoe box but can bring in some of the items to go in it there will be a box left in the kitchen for your donations.
PFA – Annual General Meeting
This year our AGM will be held on Thursday 17th September at 7.30pm in school. We will be providing wine and nibbles and hope that we will have a good turn out of parents interested in helping to raise funds for the children of our school. We do have people who are interested in becoming the new committee post holders so please do come along – you won’t be pressurised into anything too taxing! Many hands make light work – please support your children.
Help
If you have time and the desire to help in school please come forward and let Helen in the office or any other member of staff know and we will be very happy to welcome you into our friendly village school.
